Family Chart for John Brown Jr.

John Brown Jr, Kansas Historical Society circa 1880

John Brown Jr, the first child of John and Dianthe Brown, was born on the 25th of July, 1821 in Hudson, Ohio. He married Wealthy Hotchkiss in 1847.

John Brown Jr, Wealthy and son Johnnie moved to Kansas in the mid 1850s along with others who were fighting to keep Kansas slave free.  During the fighting John Brown Jr was taken captive and held for a time as a prisoner of war.

John Brown Jr did not participate in his father’s  Harpers Ferry Raid of 1859.  In 1861, as the Civil War was beginning,  he mustered men for the Company K of the Kansas Seventh Volunteer Calvary, and served as Captain of this company until his health forced his retirement.

He purchased 10 acres of farmland in the township of Put-In-Bay, on South Bass Island, Ohio, which is located in Lake Erie. He farmed, did survey work, taught mathematics, and served as a Justice of the Peace for Put-In-Bay township. He died on May 2, 1895, and is buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery, Put-In-Bay, Ohio, with rest of his immediate family. See this blog post for photos of the graves.

Neither of his two children had children, so the John Brown, Jr family line died out in 1935 when his youngest child, Edith Mae Brown Alexander passed away.
